弊社でハープを取り扱っているアメリカのDusty Strings社は9月8日、ディーラー向けにメールを送り、ラベンナ・ハープを含むラミネート素材シリーズの変更を発表しました。

ご存知のとおり、ラベンナ・シリーズの[お求めやすい]価格は、サウンド・ボックスに使われる特別な素材によって可能となりました。
弊社では白樺の芯とビニール・ベニアによる特注のラミネート・シートを仕入れています。
この素材によって、従来の木材を切断・形成・やすりがけし、異なる木材どうしを接着する製造方法ではなく、弊社のCNCマシンで素材を切断し、折って、一枚の板からボディを形成することが可能となりました。
品質や構造的な完全性に手を抜くことなく、組み立て時間はもとよりコストを節約できます。

弊社ではこの素材を2005年より美しいアッシュ(トネリコの木)の木目で調達しており、それはラベンナ・モデルの支柱やネックとよく似合うものでした。
素材についてお客様に正直にお伝えしてはいるものの、そのサウンドボックスは本物そっくりで、長年の経験ではラベンナのオーナー様はビニールだということを完全に意識することがないようです。
木材と触り心地は弊社としても気に入っており、アッシュの木目に満足していましたが、ハープ奏者からはしばしば、よりなめらかで、きめの少ないほうがお好みだというご意見も聴いておりました。
このたび、そんなハープ奏者の願いが叶います。
このところ、アッシュ木目のラミネート素材がもう手に入らないことが明らかになったのです。
弊社ではほかの素材に軸を移すことを余儀なくされており、考えられる最良の選択はスムースな手触りのラミネートです。
別の新たなアイデアや状況の変化が無い限りは、Ravenna、Serrana、Boulevardはなめらかな表面のサウンドボックスに切り替わります。

これが弊社スタッフ以外の方にも大きな違いと感じる変更なのかどうかは正直に申してよくわかりません。
弊社ではアッシュ木目の見た目に慣れていたため、変更するのは難しいのですが、なめらかな素材は、それはそれでとても素敵だと考えています。
多くの方はこの変化にお気づきにならないかもしれませんし、お気づきになるとしても、好みは分かれるとことでしょう。
残念ながら古い製品と新しい製品とをある時点で完全に切り替えることは不可能ですので、今後数ヶ月の間に出荷する製品は、ラベンナ・シリーズはアッシュ木目とスムースなもののサウンドボックスとが入り混じります。

Dear Dusty Dealers,
We’re writing with news of an upcoming change to our Ravenna family harps, including the Serrana and Boulevard. As you may know, the price of these harps is made possible by the specialized material we use for the soundboxes. We buy sheets of custom laminate material with a birch core and a vinyl veneer. This material allows us to cut grooves on our CNC machine and fold the body up out of a single panel, rather than cutting, shaping, sanding, and gluing together many different pieces of wood. We save assembly time, and therefore cost, without cutting corners on quality or structural integrity.
Since 2005, we’ve been able to get this material in a beautiful ash-wood grain, which matches the neck and pillar of the Ravenna model. It looks quite realistic, and though we are up-front about what the material is, we’ve learned over the years that many Ravenna harp owners are totally unaware of the vinyl component. Being fans of wood grain and texture ourselves, we have been really happy with the ash-grained look, though we have heard from the occasional harpist that they would prefer something more smooth and less textured.
Those harpists are about to get their wish! It has recently come to light that the ash-grained laminate material is no longer available. We are being forced to pivot to another material, and the best option available is a smooth texture laminate. Unless a new idea or opportunity arises, Ravennas, Serranas, and Boulevards will be transitioning to a smooth surface on the soundbox.
We are honestly not sure whether this is a detail that will make a big difference to anyone but us. We are so used to the ash-grained look that it’s hard to adjust to something new, but we do think the smoother material looks quite lovely in its own right. We are guessing many people will not notice the difference, and of those who do, preferences may be split in both directions.
A perfectly clean break-point between old and new isn’t possible, unfortunately, so this means that over the coming months, you may start to see a mixture of ash-grained and smooth soundboxes on the Ravenna-family harps you receive. If you are in the position of taking a special order for a customer, and you need to know for sure which way that particularl harp will go, please ask and we’ll do our best to sort it out. At a certain point, we will not be able to promise any more ash-grained harps, but we could commit to a smooth soundbox if that is desired and if waiting a little longer is not a problem.
This is likely to start affecting Boulevards, Serranas, and Ravenna 34s that are shipping in October. We have some more remaining stock of the smaller Ravenna 26 bodies with the ash grain, so the transition for that model will likely be in early 2022.
